Basic rules of Mahjong
Mahjong is a traditional four-player game where everyone is trying to make a winning hand. Your goal is to make four sets (triplets or sequences) and one pair. Here’s how it works:
- Start of the game: Each player receives 13 tiles, and the dealer receives 14.
- Play: Players take turns drawing and discarding tiles. The goal is to make a winning combination as quickly as possible.
- Win: The first player to collect four sets (triplets or sequences) and one pair calls “Mahjong” and wins. The game is then over and the points are tallied.
- If all the tiles have been drawn and no one has won, the game ends in a draw.
Basic Tile Combinations
There are several types of tile combinations in Mahjong that you will need to make a winning hand:
- Pong (triplet): three identical tiles (e.g. three tiles with the number 2 bamboo).
- Chow (sequence): three tiles of the same suit in order (e.g. 4, 5, 6 circles).
- Kong (quadruplet): four identical tiles that give the player an extra turn.
- Pair: two identical tiles (e.g. two tiles with the number 8 symbols).
Game Result
When a player collects four sets (triplets or sequences) and a pair, he calls “Mahjong” and wins the round. The game ends and points are calculated based on the difficulty of the combinations collected. The player with the most valuable hand is the winner!
